In some instance the optometrist will suggest a dilated eye examination, to obtain a more accurate assessment of the eye. If you are driving then it would be preferable for someone to take you home, as your vision can be blurry for over an hour after dilation.
The importance of regular eye examination cannot be overemphasized. Not only will changes in your vision be determined, hence allowing your glasses or contact lens prescription to be updated and thus be more effective in improving your vision; but even more importantly, regular eye exams can establish the presence of eye disease such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataract that may lead to vision loss if not dealt with.
