In wound care, the goal is to heal the wound as soon as possible, and keep it healed, to offset the possibility of gangrene and negate amputation.

Debridement is a major component of wound management to remove necrotic tissue and prepare the wound bed for healing.

Chronic wounds often contain necrotic or sloughy tissue, which can harbour bacteria and act as a barrier to healing.

Debridement methods are chosen based on the wound type, infection risk, amount of dead tissue, and the patient's condition.

DIABETES THE ULTIMATE
CHRONIC WOUND CARE PROBLEM

Over 30% of patients with diabetes develop a foot ulcer, or venous leg ulcer.

Though foot and leg ulcers can be anywhere on the foot, most occur on the ball of the foot or on the bottom of the big toe... or on the lower leg..

There are several reasons why diabetics have foot problems, but the most common reason is that many diabetics suffer from nerve damage called neuropathy, which causes loss of sensation in the feet.

Additionally, diabetics also suffer from poor circulation, which can make the foot less able to fight infection, and self heal.

Poor circulation can also change the shape of your feet or toes, which also causes problems.

Factors  that contribute to the risk of developing foot and leg ulcer  problems include:

• Elevated blood sugars
• Obesity
• Alcoholism
• Hypothyroidism
• Hypertension
• Smoking

Once you develop an ulcer, it may take weeks or even several months for it to heal. Left untreated, a foot ulcer can become infected and lead to gangrene and to the loss of a limb.DIABETIC wounds  and ulcers precede approximately 84 percent of all lower leg and foot amputations.Diabetic ulcers start as small ulcers that don’t heal, so special care must be given to taking care of your feet.
